Out of all the Resolutions I made this year for 2012 I figured being creative would be the easiest because it would be the most fun. I love tapping into my creative side. It is actually the hardest to claim time. Creative fun is great. It speaks to my heart. My creative endeavors used to be the activities I devoted the most time to : choir, band (flute), piano lessons, theatre (it was my college major!!!), speech, and the writing and sketching I used to do on the side. But that was pre-adult responsibilities. That was before Mrs. Mommy, before bills, before jobs, before life challenges. It was a time where my biggest responsibility was to just be me and have fun and find out who I am. Well I still am finding out who I am but the world keeps knocking at my door. And sadly, I still keep answering.
Another resolution I am working towards is a more organized life. So as I worked on this goal I actually worked on the creativity resolution instead. Life sure is funny sometimes! One of those nagging ideas got into my head that I should give away my flute. I had a perfect person in mind who probably could find a good home or at least a good use for an instrument that has been boxed up and hidden away for years. I pulled out my flute to see what kind of condition it appeared to be. I assembled the three pieces like I did many times. It was almost a challenge to see if I still "knew" how to play and I even doubted that I would be able to recall notes. So as my sweet son enjoyed his morning snack I played songs from the Lion King. Sometimes stopping to sing because I just can't resist. But surprise surprise I actually remembered how to play this instrument that I played day after day for almost eight years (well maybe not day after day - but I did claim to practice that often :) . Shocking I know!
As my son applauded my performance I reawakened to the joy of making music or creating art. It fires your senses and pumps the blood through your veins just a little harder and a little faster. Your breath increases in anticipation and then holds for the big ta-da - what would be the final product? Oh how I have missed that purpose! That drive! That passion! That moment where you feel you are leaving your heart wide open to whoever has time to share in the results. The hope that somehow all your efforts will mean something to someone. And feeling this with a couple puffs on my flute I realized I just wasn't ready to give that up quite yet.
Before I put away my flute (hopefully for not as long as the last time) I allowed Drew a chance to "play". He wasn't for the flute to be a flute as much as a clarinet and of course the all time favorite drums! (You can see for yourself in the pictures.) I shared with my mom the story of how he played the flute. She chuckled and responded with "I never imagined when we purchased that flute (twenty years ago! Crazy!!!) that your son would be playing it."
But that's life isn't it? We don't know what the ending will be. We rarely know what's around the corner. But we can dream. We can work towards our dreams and enjoy the ride. It is so important to remember that yes we have responsibilitie in life. But we also have to remember to play, to dream, to live, to let go, and sometimes that means we need to make music.
May your HealthFULL Journey include many rests to play, to create, to laugh, to dream, to be, and to make music whenever possible. 'Til we meet again. . .

Silence
Haven't we all heard the expression "You know you're comfortable with someone when you can sit in silence?" I can marvel at my son for hours in silence, pet my animals, relax with my hubby, and yet if it is just me. I can't handle the silence. I need to flip on the tv, grab a book; not even in the car can I handle going without the radio or my cell phone. Does that mean I am not comfortable just being me. And honestly the answer is no. I am a stew. I simmer with my emotions - all of them. Sadness, anger, joy and I just let them build and build until I boil over. It's the extremist in me. My poor hubby honestly lives in a musical or a soap opera depending on my mood.
This thought came over me as my son napped this Saturday afternoon. He doesn't tend to nap that long, so once he goes down my sprint begins. I had lunch, two loads of laundry, both bathrooms clean, the floors swept, and now I sit. I am beside myself what to do. He might be sleeping hard because we had a mommy and baby work out. My second DVD for the week was Dance Baby Dance. It wasn't quite the bonding time I had hoped as my son was looking everywhere but mommy for the most part. But I did get to lead and we had lots of snuggle time and who wouldn't love that. After our dance session we did some floor play time. Then a bottle and then nap time.
This HealthFULL Journey has brought a lot of exciting adventures my way, discovering different movements to pursue, different ways to eat and different items to taste, and now it appears the next chapter may be the emotions so that one day I can move or to just be still and quiet.
May your HealthFULL Journey bring you some moments of peace and quiet. 'Til we meet again. . .

Double Dose
Rough morning start. There are a few sounds in the world that you just dread the result. I was in another room when I heard the coughing sound, that guttural cough from our dog that you want to hustle her to the outside. I was stuck and knew I wouldn't get there in time. So with trepidation I rounded the corner. Nothing. I didn't see anything. Do you know what is worse than finding the surprise after that sound, finding nothing. So I continued my search. Hmm. . . Well I don't remember planting that pile of grass in our living room, oh right that's the surprise. Blech! Always fun to clean up such a present first thing in the morning. I then was trying to squeeze in a work-out (even though I lost some time). My plans were to return my previous DVDs to the library as I was already overdue but wanted to Bollywood at least one more time. It was still as fun as the first time. How funny that even a second attempt I could already notice the improvement. Some of the steps were easier and still makes me giggle to feed the chickens and gorilla walk. And then it is time to head off to work. I started my day with water which was my food victory. Work happened and then I hit the library after buying some fresh produce. As we have been out of town we were sorely lacking fresh veggies and fruit. (another victory). At the library I traded my excercise DVDs for two new ones. Even though I had already worked out for the day I had to do a double dose. I was so excited to try out one of the programs as it was yoga for mommy and baby. I was so pumped. I was thinking "what a bonding experience this will be for me and my little guy". The DVD wasn't quite what I anticipated. I wasn't strong enough for some of the moves and might have been more willing to try but I was terrified of dropping my lil one. Much better to be safe than sorry. There were a couple of moves that brought my son to giggles and I will take that any day of the week. I feel that this might be more fun as a group in a class setting (which is what the video was). But I will probably try this at least one more time with my guy for future ideas to bond and giggle and help improve health (especially mommy's :) Then it was time for a bottle for my lil' one and he is going through a phase. The I drink just a little more than what I share by spitting it back up all over everyone. What a fun phase. That's how I usually respond "How fun!" (Not always in the sweetest tone, but I do try to share a smile. But seriously one can only smell like sour formula so often before patience runs thin. ) Ahh what a day of doubles, and clean up to start my morning and clean up to end the evening. "How fun!" (with a smile :) May your HealthFULL Journey include double doses of the good stuff. 'Til we meet again. . .
